Whether you're exploring new options for managing menstruation or simply curious about inserting a menstrual disc, this guide will help you make an informed choice. Ready to level up your period care? Keep reading and discover the difference a disc can make.
What is a menstrual disc?
The menstrual disc is an innovative and eco-friendly period product designed to sit in the vaginal canal during menstruation. Unlike tampons, which absorb menstrual blood, the disc collects it directly at the base of the cervix. It's flexible and molds to your body, offering a secure and comfortable fit. A menstrual disc can be worn for up to 12 hours without needing to be changed, making it a convenient option for all-day wear. Thanks to its reusable nature, the period disc is not only better for the environment but also a long-term solution for your menstrual cycle, offering more freedom and comfort throughout your period.
Fun fact:
Did you know that the menstrual disc is one of the most sustainable menstruation products available? Since it’s reusable and can last up to 10 years, it significantly reduces waste compared to disposable products like tampons and pads. A small step for the planet, a big step for your menstrual cycle – pretty impressive, right?
How to insert a menstrual disc correctly
Inserting a menstrual disc might feel unfamiliar at first, but don’t worry – with a little practice, you’ll quickly see how simple it can be. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you feel confident and relaxed during your menstrual cycle:
1. Wash your hands: Before you begin, wash your hands thoroughly to keep everything hygienic and safe during menstruation.
2. Choose a comfortable position: You can insert the menstrual disc in various positions – many people find it easiest while sitting on the toilet or squatting. Try different stances and find the one that feels most comfortable for you. Spreading your legs slightly can make inserting a menstrual disc easier.
3. Fold the menstrual disc: To make insertion smoother, fold the menstrual disc first. One of the easiest methods is the “C-fold,” where you press the disc in half so it forms a "C" shape. This reduces its size and makes it easier to insert.
4. Insert the menstrual disc: Now comes the key step: gently insert the folded period disc into your vagina. Aim it toward your tailbone rather than straight up. It should sit just past the cervix, where it collects menstrual blood throughout your period.
5. Check the placement: After inserting the disc, check to make sure it feels right. You shouldn’t feel the menstrual disc if it's positioned correctly. If you do, you can gently adjust it until it feels comfortable and secure.
6. Go about your day: Once the disc is in place, you're free to move, work, or exercise as usual. The menstrual disc should give you reliable protection for up to 12 hours, so you can enjoy your day without worry.
It might take a bit of practice in the beginning, but don’t stress – you’ll quickly learn how to insert a menstrual disc with ease. And once you’ve found the right technique, you’ll discover just how comfortable and convenient it can be. You’re now ready to enjoy the freedom of a menstrual disc during your menstrual cycle!
Who is the menstrual disc suitable for?
The menstrual disc is ideal for active individuals, as it stays securely in place during activities like sports, swimming, or yoga—and it can even be worn during sex without discomfort. It’s especially well-suited for those with a heavier menstrual flow, as it can hold more fluid than many traditional products and provides up to 12 hours of protection during your period.
Environmentally conscious users will also appreciate the menstrual disc as a reusable, sustainable alternative to tampons and pads. If you’re looking for a comfortable, hygienic, and long-lasting solution for your menstrual cycle, the menstrual disc is a smart and reliable choice.
Benefits of the menstrual disc at a glance
- Longer wear time: You can wear the menstrual disc for up to 12 hours—perfect for all-day or overnight protection during your period.
- Comfort: Once inserted correctly, you’ll barely notice it’s there. No shifting, no pressure—just comfort throughout your menstrual cycle.
- Silent and discreet: The menstrual disc is practically invisible and silent—ideal for any activity, whether it’s work, travel, or relaxation.
- Sustainable: Reusable and eco-friendly, the menstrual disc helps reduce waste and supports a more sustainable approach to menstruation.
- More freedom of movement: From sports to swimming to yoga—you can do it all without worrying about leaks or discomfort.
- Hygienic: It collects menstrual blood securely without exposing it to air, which helps reduce odor and supports better intimate hygiene.
- Cost-effective: A one-time purchase that pays off—since the disc is reusable, you’ll save money over time compared to disposable products.
Removing and cleaning the menstrual disc
Now that you know how to insert a menstrual disc, let’s talk about how to remove and clean it! Don’t worry—removing a menstrual disc is just as easy as inserting it, once you’ve done it a couple of times.
1. Wash your hands: As always before anything intimate, wash your hands thoroughly. Good hygiene is essential during your menstrual cycle.
2. Find a comfortable position: Sit comfortably on the toilet or get into a position that helps you relax. Some people prefer to squat slightly—it makes reaching the disc easier.
3. Locate the disc: Gently insert a clean finger into your vagina and hook the bottom rim of the menstrual disc. It stays in place with a natural seal, so you may need to pull gently to break the suction and release it.
4. Remove it slowly: Carefully slide the disc out, keeping it level to avoid spilling. Go slowly and stay relaxed—no rush. It gets easier with practice.
5. Dispose of the contents: Empty the period disc into the toilet. Since it collects all the menstrual blood cleanly, disposal is simple and mess-free.
Cleaning the menstrual disc
Cleaning your menstrual disc is quick and easy—just follow these simple steps to keep it hygienic and ready for your next menstrual cycle.
1. Rinse with water: Rinse the disc under warm water to remove any menstrual blood. Make sure the water isn’t too hot to avoid damaging the material.
2. Use mild soap: If you like, you can clean the menstrual disc with a mild, fragrance-free soap. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly so no soap residue remains.
3. Let it dry: Allow the menstrual disc to air dry or gently pat it dry with a clean, soft towel. No worries—it’s ready to use again in no time.
4. Store properly: Store your period disc in a clean, dry place until you need it again. Many people use a small storage case to keep it hygienic and protected.
Voilà—your menstrual disc is clean and ready for its next use! Simple, effective, and perfect for a stress-free menstruation experience.
